Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I translate one of your stories or essays into another language? Do you allow fanworks based on your writing? (And other questions related to making things with things I've made ...)

In short: yes. At the very bottom of this webpage, there is a graphic and notification that looks like this:

Creative Commons License
Work on this webpage is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.

What this means in plain English is that you can reprint, share, remix, translate, and otherwise use the work I'm sharing on this site if you meet the following requirements:

  • You credit me for my work. Please credit Dawn Felagund in fannish contexts and Dawn Walls-Thumma in scholarly contexts.
  • You do not profit off of the work you make using mine.
  • You also allow others to use what you make from my work in a similar manner. In other words, if you remix a fanfiction I wrote, you need to also allow remixes of that story.

I'd also add the request that, if you use my work in some way and publish or post it publicly, you let me know just so I can go admire what you've done!

Please note that you do not need to ask for permission to use my work. The only time you should contact me to ask for permission to use my work is if you cannot meet one of the terms of the Creative Commons license. For example, if you want to reprint an essay of mine in a book that you intend to sell for a profit, that would require direct permission from me. Otherwise, I don't need to hear from you till you have a link to share with me!
